Happy Monday Franklin and Happy Eclipse Day.

A total solar eclipse will be visible across North America today, an event that won’t take place in the U.S. again until 2044.

Over the past century, only 13 total solar eclipses have been visible in the U.S. with the last one happening in 2017.

For those who don’t know what a solar eclipse is, it’s when the moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting the moon's shadow on Earth.

Timeline for Middle Tennessee (according to NASA):
Partial eclipse begins: 12:44pm
Maximum eclipse (94.78%): 2:03pm
Partial eclipse ends: 3:20pm

Unfortunately, it does appear that we’ll have some cloud cover at the time of the eclipse so visibility may not be great.

Don’t worry if you’re too busy today to check it out — you can just catch the next one in 20 years.

P.S. - make sure you wear protective eclipse glasses (look for the symbol ISO 12312-2). While experts say it can be safe to look up during the few minutes when the moon fully blocks the sun, staring directly at the sun before or after the total eclipse (or during a partial eclipse) can result in permanent eye damage.
